On 24th of May, the south of Tianshan mountain was swept by cold air, which brought strong wind and hailstorms. The wind force reached 6-7 degrees, with some local areas reaching 8 degrees; hailstones as large as soybeans were formed.
To make things worse, in the early morning of 25th of May, the region was hit again by frost which was rare in this area. At 3-5 o’clock in the morning, the temperature fell below 0℃.
During those days, almost all grape varieties were in bloom, which means that losses were inevitable in some vineyards, especially in Yanqi Region.
After the terrible weather, vineyards in Yanqi were terribly damaged. A lot of vines were frostbitten；Leaves began to curl and turn black. At rough estimation, Tiansai Winery would lose half its potential crop, Xiangdu Winery would reduce 30%. Undoubtedly，the production of Yanqi Region in 2018 will certain be reduced by a significant percentage.
Hardly recovered from the bitterness of the disaster, local vineyards have already started to take measures to minimize their losses. Canopy management are strengthened to prevent further pest or fungal diseases. Appropriate nutrient management is also necessary to limit the growth of the vines after flowers were destroyed, in order to guarantee the normal differentiation of the flower buds. Furthermore, attention will be paid to balance the vegetative growth and reproductive growth of vines with flower buds.
