According to the winemaker from Junding Winery( located in Penglai region), Penglai enjoyed even and frequent rainfall in this Spring, with 114mm-rainfall in May, which has supplied sufficient water for vine growing and flowering. Though a sudden hailstorm hit a small local area, most vineyards fared pretty well, with little loss being caused.
Chardonnay was the earliest variety to flower: starting from 12th of May, but being subdued due to the relatively low temperature – below 25℃ in the following week. After the 20th of May, the highest temperature remained above 25℃, all varieties entered full blossom one after another. Now, the Chardonnay have berries as big as green beans.
White varieties began to flower around 24th of May, and entered full blossom around 27th -30th of May, while flowering of Cabernet Sauvignon was a litter late than previous years.
Sufficient rainfall has encouraged the growth of vines, and sunny days in the end of May and the beginning of June have created a good condition for flowering. The Production Director of Jiuding Vineyard said that the winery is supervising the leaf potential to decide the time of drip irrigation.
According to Huayubo, the winemaker of Taiyihu Winery, flowering of white varieties came to an end in the end of May while flowering of red varieties was also a little late.
