Location and History
Located in the North China region，Shanxi lies on a plateau made up of higher ground to the east (Taihang Mountains) and the west (Lüliang Mountains) and a series of valleys in the center through which the Fen River runs.
Winemaking history in Shanxi can be dated back to Tang dynasty（around 7th-10thcentury C.E）, and it peaked in Ming dynasty（around 14th-17th century C.E）. In modern times, winemaking in Shanxi was resurrected after the Reform and Open Policy towards the late 1980s. However, compared with other wine regions in China, winemaking in this province is still very limited.
Climate and Grape Growing
Shanxi has a continental monsoon climate with warm and humid summers, cold and dry winters below 0 °C . Spring is extremely dry and prone to dust storms. Being located in the plateau, Shanxi is one of the sunniest parts of China. More than 60% of the annual rainfall is concentrated between June and August.
Most vineyards are located either on terraced hills or in the foothills of the mountain range in the southeastern part of the province, with an average altitude of 800-900 meters, surrounding three towns: xiaxian，taigu and Xiangning.Plenty of sunshine , and fertile brown earthin these areas are well suited to grape growing.
Surrounded by Taihang Mountain and Lvliang Mountain, with an average altitude of 880-950m, Taigu has a typical continental climate. Here vineyards are planted on deep, well-drained silty sand soils, and benefit from plenty of sunshine and significant diurnal ranges. Relatively dry condition has lowered the incidence of fungal diseases, but pests like red spider can still cause troubles.
The most famous winery in Taigu is Grace Vineyard(怡园酒庄). Founded in 1997, Grace Vineyard takes up about 50% market share in the local province in terms of wine sales, followed by Changyu and GreatWall. This vineyard started to plant Aglianico and Marselan in 2006. Saperavi, Sangiovese, Tempranillo, Nebbiolo, Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Noir have also been planted since 2013 though in small quantities.
Qingxu is located well inland, far away from the east coast of China. From west to east, there are mountainous areas, diluvia fan, inclined plain and alluvial plain. It has a continental climate, with long, dry and cold winter , warm and rainy summer. Here vineyards are planted on loam，silty sand and gravel soils.
Main red varieties are Cabernet Sauvignon，Merlot and Cabernet Franc; white varieties are Chardonnay and Chenin Blanc.
Xiangning is located in the southwestern point of Shanxi province. This region is known as a wine region for a winery named Rongzi Winery(戎子酒庄)，whose wines have been recognized as GPI products in China. This winery is located at 35°-36°north latitude, with an altitude of 950-1300m. The vineyards here enjoy plenty of sunshine and an average diurnal range more than 15℃, The microclimate of this part of loess plateau is particularly suited for wine grapes.
Main red varieties are Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Marselan, Pinot Noir, Petit Verdot, Muscat. Main white varieties: Chardonnay, Italian Riesling, Riesling, Sauvignon Blanc, Petit Manseng are planted in sandy soils as deep as 200m.
